Ok .……we need to talk about Telstra.

Here we are a few weeks after Medibank and Optus taking about yet another case of data being exposed.

Sure, we get the difference. This was not a cyber attack but technical error or depending on how you see it, human error.

Telstra admitted that the data, including the names, addresses and phone numbers of 132,000* customers, had been released on the Directory Assistance Services and White Pages websites. To make matters worse, these were people who, for likely personal reasons, had asked their data to remain private.

It was a classic breach of trust. People are quite rightly upset.

But here’s the thing. As far as accountability goes and the risks that come with it, this is no different to a cyber attack. One of the greatest causes of data breaches are people, poor planning and a lack of process.

It’s not that hard to establish the right setup, introduce stronger, and in most cases easier processes and protect your business from errors and accidents.

It’s not about being preachy and pointing fingers.

It’s good old fashioned business sense.

The best news is that it’s not that hard and as you know, we can help. Just like we help many small medium and large businesses across the CBD, North Sydney, Chatswood and surrounding areas.
